What Is a Tarot Soul Card?

Your soul card is your personality number reduced to a single digit. Where the personality card describes how you act, the soul card is read as what drives you: longings, lessons and the quiet pattern under everyday behavior.

How the Soul Card Is Calculated

Take your personality number (10 to 22) and add its digits. 13 becomes 1 + 3 = 4, so a Death personality card has an Emperor soul card. A 19 passes through 10 on the way to 1. If your personality number is already 1 to 9, your soul card is the same card.

  • 10 → 1 The Magician
  • 11 → 2 The High Priestess
  • 12 → 3 The Empress
  • 13 → 4 The Emperor
  • 14 → 5 The Hierophant
  • 15 → 6 The Lovers
  • 16 → 7 The Chariot
  • 17 → 8 Strength
  • 18 → 9 The Hermit
  • 19 → 10 → 1 The Magician
  • 20 → 2 The High Priestess
  • 21 → 3 The Empress
  • 22 → 4 The Emperor

FAQ

Soul Card FAQ

What is the difference between a personality card and a soul card?

In the tradition popularized by Mary K. Greer, the personality card describes how you present yourself and act in the world, while the soul card describes your inner motivations and deeper lessons. When they are the same card, the outer and inner expression are closely aligned.

Can you have two tarot birth cards?

Yes. When your total is between 10 and 22, you have a personality card (the larger number) and a soul card (the single-digit reduction). A total of 19 passes through three cards: The Sun, Wheel of Fortune and The Magician. When your total is 1 to 9, the personality and soul card are the same card.
